How to Prepare for Your Family Beach Photo Session
One question I get asked time and time again by my clients is about what they should wear for their family summer photo sessions and how to best prepare for them.
Preparing for your family beach photoshoot is one of the best ways to make sure your session feels fun, relaxed, and results in beautiful images you’ll love for years to come!
When choosing outfits, I always recommend light and airy clothing in soft, neutral, or pastel tones. Think whites, creams, soft blues, blush, tan, or light sage. These colors photograph beautifully against the beach backdrop and help create that timeless, dreamy feel. Try to coordinate colors rather than match exactly—this keeps everyone looking cohesive while still allowing each person’s personality to shine.
Flowy dresses, linen shirts, khaki shorts, and breathable fabrics work wonderfully for beach sessions. Avoid heavy fabrics, bold logos, neon colors, or busy patterns, as they can distract from the natural beauty of the beach and your family connection.
The best time for beach photos is during golden hour, the hour before sunset, when the lighting is soft, warm, and flattering. Midday sun can be harsh and create strong shadows, so less sun is always better for that soft, glowing look.
To help your session run smoothly, here are a few tips:
Arrive a little early so everyone has time to settle in and relax.
Bring only the essentials—a brush, wipes, water, and maybe a towel for sandy feet.
Let little ones nap and eat beforehand so they are happy and ready.
Avoid forcing smiles—the best photos come from natural interaction, cuddles, laughter, and play.
Be ready to move—walking, snuggling, and playing in the sand creates the most genuine moments.
Come with a relaxed mindset—if the kids are having fun, the photos will reflect that joy!
Most importantly, treat the session like a fun family outing rather than a formal event. Laugh together, play with your children, and enjoy the moment. Those real interactions are what make your gallery feel authentic and full of life.
Remember, this is your world, I’m just living in it!
I hope that my tips have been helpful and can better prepare you and your family for your family beach photo session!
